DMC: Devil May Cry Review: Thank Sparda, Dante’s Back

I am in the mindset that Ninja Theory can do no wrong. Their
first outing with 2007’s
Heavenly Sword
was a terrific achievement in graphic fidelity and story-telling at the time.
Three years later, they released
Enslaved:
Odyssey to the West
which was a very well written and respected game but
sales proved too low to warrant a sequel. When DMC was announced, there was
outrage over Dante’s new look while I stood tall with my proverbial “I Believe
in Ninja Theory” sign held high. If you haven’t heard yet, this game is
phenomenal.

 All of the aspects
you’d expect from a Devil May Cry game are there. The look and gameplay of the
previous games are abundant, and Dante is still the sarcastic joker that fans
have grown to love. Ninja Theory has nailed it with some of the most jaw
dropping and inspired levels that I have seen in gaming to date, and boss
fights that genuinely create the most unique experience I have yet to experience.
Packed with the fantastic combo system that put the franchise on the map and a
restructured upgrade system, Ninja Theory wiped the slate clean to provide
something familiar but very, very fresh at the same time.

I often play Devil May Cry games with the knowledge that the story will not only be ridiculous, but often campy and poorly written. DMC has changed my mind.

I often play Devil May Cry games with the knowledge that the story will not only be ridiculous, but often campy and poorly written. DMC has changed my mind. Are there still extremely cringe worthy lines? Absolutely, but the story comes together in a great way and the finale puts many things in their right place.

Cast your worries aside, worried fan, DMC is back in dominating fashion. DMC is in good hands and on the right path to become a relevant franchise again. Welcome back Dante.
