Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation Review: Creed Fatigue

Everybody knows what they’re getting gameplay-wise from Assassin’s
Creed and that doesn’t change with Liberation, Ubisoft’s portable companion
game. The game stays the same as far as gameplay and platforming. The
animations are relatively the same and if you play the console’s Assassin’s
Creed 3 and jump right into this, you will be completely bored of the franchise
even more so than you probably already are.

I did really enjoy the aspects of the story
that a lot of games wouldn’t touch in their writing. You control Aveline de
Grandpré, an African American woman ex-slave which has been unheard of up until
Liberation and for that I commend them, but, unfortunately, it isn’t a very
good story. Also, there are forced functionality mechanics drilled into the game
including a terrible “hold up to the light” function that was awful in low light situations. I took it on a
night road trip to Las Vegas and this feature rendered the game completely
worthless an hour into the drive. Maybe Ubisoft should take a break on
Assassin’s Cre…what’s that? They have another one coming this holiday? Just great.
